I think it’s safe to say that no one enjoys having pests invade their home. Between spiders, ants, mice, and rats, these critters are all better left outside. If you’re sick of pests calling your house their home but don’t like the idea of harsh chemicals, poison, or cruel traps, this all-natural method is definitely up your alley.

As it turns out, pests (specifically mice) absolutely hate the strong, potent smell of peppermint, making it the perfect natural deterrent. According to Bulk Herb Store’s Shoshanna’s Kitchen, there are three main ways you can use peppermint to keep pests at bay.

1. Plant Mint Outside

One great way to deter pests is by planting peppermint plants in your garden surrounding your home. Once they smell the mint, they’ll start heading in the opposite direction.

2. Tied Sock Method

This easy trick involves placing some dried peppermint leaves in a sock and tying off the end. Place the sock near any nooks, crannies, or dark places where you suspect pests are hiding.

3. DIY Spray

To make your own peppermint pest deterrent spray, steep some peppermint leaves in boiling water as though you were making tea. Strain out the leaves when the solution cools, transfer to a spray bottle, and spray under cabinets, in closets, and in other pest-prone areas.
