I have always loved going yardsaling and antiquing. So when I’m wandering around and see that someone’s put furniture on the side of the road, I stop to check it out about 99 percent of the time. It turns out that DIY fan Alicia feels just as strongly! Alicia spotted an antique table on the roadside and repainted it to make it into a stunning piece of furniture (as featured on Hometalk)

The table Alicia discovered did not include the two glass top pieces and had cuts and scratches throughout the wood. Once the table’s legs and frame were stripped and sanded, Alicia started applying a paint layering technique. She next constructed a frame that would support the cushion she made for the top.

Alicia covered a thick foam with French-inspired fabric to create cushioning. She simulated distressing on the legs and frame of the table, which is a beautiful shabby-chic look. Alicia topped off the table with clear wax to leave the creases of the table dark. This provided such a distinctive look to the table’s finish, not to mention some wonderful dimension. If you’re planning to upcycle or have old furniture that needs to go, it’s helpful to have the right resources to get rid of it so you’ll have room for your new work.

Alicia wrapped the bottom in felt to keep with the spirit of traditional benches and give everything a clean, finished look. The final product is an antique, French-like bench that could sit nicely in an entryway, a living room, or a bedroom. Great work, Alicia! Should I leap forward and become a craftsman? I’m not very handy, but your do-it-yourself project might motivate me to upcycle some furniture!
