We tend to spend a lot of time in our kitchens, so they’re generally the rooms in our homes that see the most wear and tear. Between cooking, dishes, pets, and kids, your kitchen can go from sparkling clean to pretty dirty in a very short amount of time. The hack we’re about to share with you will help to make that “sparkling clean” period last a little bit longer!

Lemons are a fruit with tons of antiviral and antibacterial properties. Not only do they disinfect, but they also deodorize. And that’s the goal of this hack. Before you go to bed, cut a lemon into three or four wedges. Then, sprinkle some coarse salt over the lemon wedges and leave them out on your kitchen counter.

The salt allows the smell of the lemon to extend farther, and the lemon itself will absorb foul odors and bacteria from the air. So when you wake up in the morning, the air will be clean and your kitchen will smell naturally fresh. You can use the resulting lemon and salt wedges to scrub wooden cutting boards, too. Because wood is porous, it traps bacteria in the grain. The lemon and salt will remove that bacteria so that your cutting board is clean and disinfected.

Hopefully now that you know this simple hack, you can show your kitchen (and your wooden cutting boards) some love, and leave it smelling clean and fresh!
