The Recommended Sleep Times For Each Age Group

Oftentimes, I feel like I struggle to get enough sleep at night. However, if I have the rare free weekend day and sleep too long, I end up being just as groggy and sluggish as if I was overtired. It can be difficult to determine how much sleep we should be getting, especially when it comes to our kids’ sleep schedules. However, recent research from the National Sleep Foundation has revealed how much sleep a person should be getting based on their age.

Newborns

0-3 months of age: 14 to 17 hours

Infants

4-11 months of age: 12 to 15 hours

Toddlers

1-2 years of age: 11 to 14 hours

Preschoolers

3-5 years of age: 10 to 13 hours

School-Aged Children

6-13 years of age: 9 to 11 hours

Teenagers

14-17 years of age: 8 to 10 hours

Young Adults

18-25 years of age: 7 to 9 hours

Adults

26-64 years of age: 7 to 9 hours

Older Adults

Age 65 and over: 7 to 8 hours
