Man Gives Away $4 Million Apartment Complex To Let Homeless Women And Children Live For Free

You don’t need me to tell you that there is a massive discrepancy between the rich and the poor. Some people have everything, while many more are struggling just to put a roof over their heads and food on their plates. Rick Steves is one inspiring person who is seeking to lessen the gap between the rich and the poor, recently having donated a $4 million apartment complex to be used exclusively for housing homeless women and their children.
You may recognize Rick – he’s an American travel writer, author, activist, and television personality. In 2005, Rick bought a 24-unit apartment complex that he gifted to YWCA. “They used [the complex] to house single moms who were recovering hard-drug addicts and were now ready to get custody of their children back. Imagine the joy of knowing that I could provide a simple two-bedroom apartment for a mom and her kids as she fought to get her life back on track,” explained Rick.
The complex was named Trinity Place, a building dedicated to getting single mothers back on their feet and prepared to reunite with their children after being incarcerated or struggling with addiction. The complex even features a playroom full of toys and books, as well as an outdoor playground. Single mothers and their children have a safe space to live, surrounded by other women in a similar situation who act as a network of support.
“The gap between rich and poor in our country continues to widen. And I believe needs — such as affordable housing — will only increase as budget cuts are implemented,” says Rick. “Organizations like the YWCA will need to pick up the slack. If our country truly wants to be great, we need creative thinking connected with our hearts. And it’s my hope that love and compassion can trump values of crass commercialism, greed, and ‘winners’ beating ‘losers.'”
