Cleaning the microwave is definitely not something I do on a regular basis. I always forget about this chore because the inside of the microwave isn’t something I’m constantly looking at. However, over time, your microwave becomes coated in burnt food residue, oil, and grime. And so, it’s important to thoroughly clean it every now and then.

Fortunately, cleaning all of that burnt gunk doesn’t have to require a ton of scrubbing, effort, and time. There’s a simple trick that will help you to clean and disinfect your microwave with no tough scrubbing needed. All you need is a glass measuring cup or bowl, some water, and a few lemon slices.

Fill your microwave-safe bowl with water, then squeeze in the juice from a few lemon wedges. Add in the squeezed lemon wedges as well. Place the bowl in your microwave for three minutes. When the time’s up, let the bowl remain in the microwave with the door shut for about five minutes. Be very careful removing the bowl from the microwave – it will likely be very hot.

Microwaving the lemon and water causes lemon-infused humidity to coat the inside of your microwave. Lemon is a natural cleaning agent, so the lemon water is loosening up the residue in your microwave and cleaning it. This should allow you to wipe down the inside of your microwave with a damp cloth – and no need for any heavy scrubbing.
