Not to brag, but when it comes to upcycling old furniture, I like to think I get creative. I don’t exactly know- how do I put this? I’m not like a pro or anything — I don’t have my own fancy workshop in the garage or a collection of power tools that could erect a house. But when you have three kids, you learn to try harder. Even if you did manage the tiniest of DIY projects, their faces make all of it worth it. So, my husband and I? We’’ve done some minor upcycling projects for the guys. Nothing Pinterest-perfect (story of my life), but hey, as long as it’s functional and cute, that’s what counts! And I’m constantly sifting the Internet, voyaging through other people’s genius ideas — because, wow, some people are creatively wild.
So here are some of those upcycling projects where I was like, “Holy smokes, that is seriously amazing.”
1. The Old Drawer Turned Book Chair
This one is brilliant. You know that random drawer from a former dresser that has been sitting around forever because you know you will find a use for it one day? Well, here’s your sign. And then someone sawed a side off an old drawer, added some padded sides, sprayed on a coat of paint and presto—cute book chair! And the bottom of the drawer turns into a kind of mini built-in bookshelf, so it’s a nice little reading nook for kids. Just picture your kid snuggling inside this little, cozy nook with their favorite book — soo cute. I can totally imagine this on a reading nook surrounded by fairy lights, fluffly rug and a hot cup of cocoa (for me, DUH).
2. Nightstand to Reading Throne
Okay, so this one starts with a dated nightstand — most likely the one that’s been in your guest room for as long as you’ve had one — and turns it into a small reading throne. Yes, throne. The transformation is wild. The top is sliced off and a seat cut, the inside hollowed for storing books, and then it’s painted and padded to look like something lifted from a cushy library. Bonus points if you choose a fun fabric for the cushions—superheroes, princesses, or even funky geometric prints. I love how this project shows that even the most blaaaah piece of furniture can become something spectacular with a little imagination (and, okay, maybe a power saw).
3. From Outdated Nightstand to Elegant Book Chair
This one is possibly my favorite, just because of the before-and-after magic. This is a designer-looking piece. They transformed it into a cushy reading chair with a fancier motif: black and white stripes. It’s serving up “vintage but make it chic.” The bottom drawer does function, so you have a secret stashing spot for books, snacks, or — let’s be honest — random crayons and lost toy parts. The best part? It looks like something you would buy at a fancy kids’ furniture store — and yet, it was all DIY. Talk about upcycling goals.
4. Soft Pastel Nightstand Makeover
Brittany Lancaster has nailed this upcycling project – and this is actually her third! This cute pastel pink night stand was turned into this sweet little reading chair with the sweetest print on the fabric. The drawer is still in action, which makes it ideal for storing books, toys, even some toasty reading socks.
The thing that I love most about this design is how soft and inviting it appears. This would be lovely in a nursery or kids’ playroom or even as a small, personalized reading nook in a bedroom. Plus, that gold drawer pull? So classy.
5. Bold & Bright DIY Reading Chair
If you enjoy a pop of color, this is for you. It was a Christmas present from his niece and nephew, or rather, a cool present, constructed of turquoise and white crocheted cotton by Kyle Tester.
The new coat of paint, the chic cushion, and the solid craft is just so much fun and durability with little ones. The nightstand’s frame was turned into a bench and the drawer was untouched, adding storage. This is one of those do-it-yourself projects that gives the finished product a professional feel but was created with so much love.
I can see this in a playroom so easily (and possibly even a classroom reading corner) — it’s striking, functional, just plain cool.
6. Personalized White Reading Nook
This one takes it to the next level with a personal touch! Naomi Peake says her father-in-law also made matching versions of this design for her two daughters and they are still very much loved and used today.
The white finish is perfect for a clean, timeless look, and this floral cushion adds a soft, cozy feel. And can we not talk about the most adorable aspect — the custom nameplate on the top? This is not simply a reading chair; it’s an archive of personal memories.
In addition to being a cozy reading area, Naomi added that the ends make for excellent toy, dress-up clothes, or kiddie treasure storage. An emotional and practical victory!
Why You Need to Give These Clever Upcycling Ideas a Try
If you have an old nightstand or drawer (or anything box-shaped, really), you could absolutely do one of these projects. They don’t require a lot of room, they’re affordable (hello, free furniture repurposed), and they make reading for kids super-duper special. And let’s face it — there’s something simply satisfying about turning the forgotten into the magical. Then, which one will you try first?
