Brooms are a necessary cleaning tool! Whether you are sweeping the floors of your home or organizing a workspace, the right broom can allow you to do it faster and more efficiently. Although brooms become dirty and worn over time, making it difficult to “sweep” up dust and debris, there is a simple tip for cleaning brooms.
The tip came from a woman who learned by trial and error. As hard as she tried, her brooms wore out and bristles became frayed and bent within a very short time. After playing around with different methods, she learned that soaking the broom in a mixture of hot water, vinegar, and salt would clean the broom. It would also extend its lifetime.

This method works terrifically for so many reasons. The salt gets hard in the bristles, which makes them more durable and less likely to bend and fray. The vinegar helps to dissolve dirt and debris that is stuck in the bristles, and the hot water cleans deep into the broom.
Try this hack at home if you want! You’ll need a bucket or bathtub. Fill with hot water, add approximately one cup of vinegar, and add a lot of salt. Place your broom in the mixture so that the bristles are covered in all three ingredients. Let the broom soak for a minimum of 30 minutes, or ideally overnight.
When the broom soaks, take it out of the mixture and give it a shake to remove excess water. Stand the broom up to dry; for example, use a wall or a broom hook. This way, any remaining moisture will drain down to the tips of the bristles. Rather than adding to the waterlogged issue by having it rinse the bristles.
Not only does this tip extend the life of your broom, but it will save money as well. Obviously, every time you toss out a broom and purchase a new one, it contributes to waste. The habit of repeatedly replacing brooms is a sustainable living topic these days — in short, anything that contributes to a better environment.
