The Reason People Are Putting Dishwasher Tablets in Garbage Bags

So, not to be dramatic, but I think I actually found a way to clean oven racks without crying. I always hated cleaning oven racks. And not saying that I love doing it now, but this method really makes this chore so much easier.

I know. I didn’t think it was possible either.

For the record, I used to avoid this chore like it was a trap. I’d open the oven, catch a glimpse of the sad, blackened racks, and just shut it again like, not today, Satan. I’ve tried the sprays. The scrubbing. The boiling water. One time I soaked them in the tub and had to explain to my landlord why the enamel was kind of… scratched. (I did not win that one.)

Anyway—here’s what happened. I was scrolling Reddit at 1AM (as one does) and stumbled on this post where someone cleaned their oven racks using dishwasher tablets inside a black garbage bag.

Did I trust them? No. Did I try it the next day? Obviously.

What I Used (Not Proud of How Long It Took Me to Find a Garbage Bag)

Here’s the stuff I needed—none of it fancy:

One crusty set of oven racks

A black trash bag (big, and preferably not the scented kind, which I learned the hard way)

A dishwasher tablet (I used the kind with the little blue dot in the middle—no idea if that matters)

A bowl of warm water

A sponge

Blind faith

Step One: Stuff It All in the Bag

This part was oddly satisfying. I shoved the racks into the garbage bag like I was packing up the worst kind of camping gear. Then tossed in the dishwasher tablet like a little bomb and hoped for the best.

I didn’t even measure the water. I just filled a bowl with warm water and dumped it in—enough to get the tablet fizzing a bit. Not a full soak, just a small puddle at the bottom.

Step Two: Tie It Up and Walk Away

I tied the bag and dumped the whole thing in my bathtub because I didn’t totally trust it not to leak. And then I forgot about it. Seriously. I left it overnight, went to sleep, didn’t think about it again until I stepped into the bathroom in the morning and remembered there was a bag of metal and soapy goo waiting for me in the tub.

Step Three: The Reveal

Opening it was gross. Like peeling open a warm, wet science project. But then—this is the part that shocked me—the grime just wiped off. No scrubbing. I ran the sponge over one rack and it literally slid clean. I stared at it for a solid minute like I couldn’t believe what just happened.

It wasn’t spotless, like brand-new stainless steel out of a showroom. But compared to what it looked like before? Huge win.

I rinsed them in the shower. Let them air dry on a towel like a proud new parent.

But… Why Does This Work?

I don’t totally know. Apparently, dishwasher tablets are packed with degreasing agents, and when you combine that with steam and a sealed space, it creates some kind of cleaning magic. The garbage bag traps everything in, the tablet does its thing, and you don’t have to do anything except not open it too soon out of curiosity.

No scrubbing and no weird-smelling oven cleaner. No scratching your tub and no crying.

What Else Can You Clean Like This?

According to the same thread, people use this trick on:

Stove grates

Grill grates

Baking pans with that stubborn baked-on gunk you keep pretending isn’t there

I haven’t tried it yet, but I probably will. I’ve got a baking sheet that’s been haunting me since 2021.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes. I mean, unless you love scrubbing oven racks for some reason (and who are you lying too, no one likes doing that), this is the way. It’s lazy in the best possible sense—you do the setup, walk away, and come back to clean racks. What’s not to love?

And now every time I open the oven, I feel proud. Because cleaned that in a trash bag. With a dish pod. And you know what? I taught this hack to my mother, who thinks she’s a pro at cleaning. And she 100% LOVED this.

So. If you’ve got nasty racks and a dishwasher tablet lying around… you know what to do.
