Let’s get real for a moment: microwaves, like all appliances, gather the tornado of daily cooking. One day it is only a reheating issue to be followed indignantly by going in on dried pasta sauce spots, which look like modern art. Don’t even talk to me about the smell, one thing of missed popped corn, and the funk lasts for days. If you have ever opened the microwave, and winced at the clumps of food all stuck on the inside, I feel for you.
Once upon a time, I scoured until my arms ached using every spray and “miracle” cleaner on the shelf. None of them worked for me, nor were they gratifying in the least, particularly when I would be nuking food stuff in the microwave right after spraying chemicals in it. That never felt good to me.
Finally, I discovered what I honestly think is the best way to clean a microwave: using a natural steam process, using only water, vinegar, and lemon. No muscular energy, no odd smells, and most importantly, no chemicals as well. It is my method of choice, and I feel like quite a low key genius every time I do it.
Let me run you through the microwave cleaning method I have fallen in love with. That is why this vinegar and lemon method of Nature has had and true reasons.
Conventional Method
At first, I could hardly believe it could do anything, I thought how potent could lemon slices and vinegar ever be? It turned out, it is science.
Steam action: When the water is heated in the microwave, it becomes vapor and clings to all of the impurities in the oven.
The steam created by this hot mixture takes away the old grease and baked-on foods so that they wipe off.
Vinegar: This is the fat eater. White vinegar does for grease what it does for our salad dressing and many other things. It leaves a non-greasy substance behind. It eats up those gross odors too. This leaves you with the power house of the household.
Lemon: Not just the aromatic! The addition of them will provide citric acid so that the cleaning capacity with other additions is increased. They will eat this funk up and instead leave a lemon grove aroma instead of a grease-pit aroma.
This combination will not only do the work but leave you also more environmental, more non-toxic, and perhaps even more economic. Since I have not had the need to go get a commercial microwave oven cleaner over the years.
What is Needed
You have it all probably at home. Essentials though:
cup water
tablespoon white vinegar
a few pieces of lemon (these are absolutely not necessary, but smell good)
a bowl that you can put in the microwave (do not use any metal and plastic that may melt)
a damp cloth of soft sponge or microfiber
This is the ultimate vinegar lemon microwave oven cleaner, and you will be able to see the reason why.
Step by Step: How to Clean the Microwave Oven with Vinegar and Lemon
This is the method I have used for years, and is not a mistake.
Step 1: In a microwavable bowl add about 1 cup of water, add in about 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, add in a few lemon slices and give it a swirl for good luck.
Step 2: Now put this in the microwave on high for about 3 minutes or so. This gives enough time to get very hot but not boiling to the point of not being able to be steamed.
Step 3: When it beeps, make sure you let it sit an additional 5 minutes with the door shut. That steam must continue doing what it is agreeable with its looseness up of dried on substances while you enjoy the leisure afternoon.
Step 4: Careful (I mean CAREFUL) open the door and take out the detergent of hot water. Use oven mitts or a towel to do so. Trust me on this one. I learned the hard way via my bare hands.
Step 5: Take any damp cloth or sponge and wipe down the interiors. The junk will come off so easily it is almost satisfying. Just like those cleaning videos on TikTok but, in VIVID.
Step 6: If you feel like you might want to tack some class on this, take a clean towel and ask to dry the interiors and put the turnable back in.
That’s all there is to it. You’ll have a nice clean microwave that smells lemony-fresh.
Optional deep-clean tips (for the extra gunky days)
Okay, so maybe you have really let it go. I mean REALLY let it go. We have all been there. If your microwave looks like it hosted a food fight, try these extras:
Take your cloth, dip it in the warm vinegar/lemon mixture, and scrub off any stubborn areas as needed. It will still not require a lot of effort, but it adds a little pizzazz.
Take out the glass microwave turntable and wash it separately in dish soap and warm water. Just that one step will help immensely.
Wipe down the outside surfaces of the microwave, including the control panel, with some mild cleaner or your leftover vinegar mixture. Just don’t use anything too harsh. Let me tell you I learned the hard way about bleach not being a friend to buttons.
How Often Should You Really Clean Your Microwave?
Honestly? It depends on how often you use the oven! If it is like your best friend (no judgement here), you should shoot for:
Quick wipe-downs after any messy uses
A deep clean like this about every week or two weeks.
If you do it consistently, it will help you avoid the “how on earth did it get like this!” situation.
Common Microwave Cleaning Trip-Ups (Trust Me, I’ve Done This Also)
I’m letting you in on my microwave cleaning sins. It saves you the trouble!
Using the wrong bowl. Check to make sure it’s microwave safe. Metal? No way. Plastic? Only if it specifically states you can use it. Otherwise, it will melt.
Overheat the mix. More time does not equal better steaming. If you go over five minutes, it’ll bubble over, and you’ll make another mess!
Too much vinegar. One time I doubled the vinegar, thinking “this will work better”. It didn’t. My kitchen smelled like a pickle for two days.
Stick with the basics and you’ll do fine.
Why I Keep Going Back to This Natural Microwave Cleaning Hack
There are several reasons that this is better than anything else. I’ll share them with you:
It’s quick — this whole thing takes under 10 minutes from everything to start to finish.
It’s effective — dried cheese and dried sauce wipe off like nothing.
It’s natural — so no chemicals near your food!
It’s scent-pleasing — the lemon takes the smell from the vinegar.
And it works on all kinds of microwaves — counter top, over-the-stove, whatever.
This is not one of those “sounds good in theory” type hacks. It’s one of those rare, low work, high results kinds that works, making you feel like you have life under control (for at least that moment).
