Clausmopolitan Cocktail: The Drink You Need This Holiday

Clausmopolitan Cocktail: The Drink You Need This Holiday

Holiday traditions sneak up on you sometimes. You think you’re just trying something once, and the next thing you know, it’s not December without it. That’s kind of what happened with this drink—my beloved, slightly ridiculous Clausmopolitan.

I stumbled into it a few years back during one of those nights where the house is finally quiet, you’re still wearing a holiday sweater that’s 20% tinsel, and you just want to make something festive that doesn’t involve baking or a sink full of dishes. I had leftover cranberry juice, vodka, and a bag of flaked coconut from failed Santa hat cupcakes. So I improvised. Now it’s a whole thing.

I make one every year. Sometimes several. Sometimes… too many.

Ingredients (a.k.a. Stuff You Might Already Have, If You’re the Type to Own Triple Sec)

Here’s what goes into a Clausmopolitan:

  • ½ cup cranberry juice
  • ½ cup white cranberry-peach juice (yes, very specific, but totally worth it)
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • ½ ounce vodka

For the rim:

  • Lime juice
  • Corn syrup
  • Flaked coconut (the bigger flakes work better for the snowy effect)

That’s it. No need to hunt down weird liqueurs with unpronounceable names. If you’ve ever made a Cosmopolitan or anything vaguely brunchy, you probably already own half of this.

And if you don’t have white cranberry-peach juice, I’ve used straight white cranberry in a pinch. Still good. Just… less peachy.

How I Make It (And Occasionally Get Coconut All Over The Floor)

Okay, so first you have to do the rim. Don’t skip this. It’s like 90% of the visual joy. I learned this the hard way when I made one in a regular glass with no rim stuff, and it looked like sadness in a cup.

Here’s how it goes: take your martini glass (or whatever you’ve got—let’s be real, I’ve used a jam jar before), dip the rim in lime juice first. Then into corn syrup. It’ll get a little sticky, which is what you want. Finally, roll it in flaked coconut. Be liberal. Snowstorm vibes.

Then the drink part. Throw some ice in a shaker. Add the cranberry juice, the white cranberry-peach juice, the triple sec, and the vodka. Shake it like you’ve just finished wrapping ten gifts and need a moment. Pour it into your coconut-rimmed glass and, if you’re me, admire it for a second before sipping. It’s actually kind of beautiful. Not to be dramatic, but it feels like a Hallmark movie in liquid form.

The First Sip Is Always A Bit Magical

There’s a moment where the cranberry hits and then the coconut sort of kicks in from the rim and it’s… surprising? It shouldn’t work, but it does. Tart and sweet and faintly tropical, like your drink got dressed up for a Christmas luau.

It’s not strong enough to knock you over, but you feel it. Which is perfect. It’s celebratory but not dangerous. Unless you drink three in a row, in which case—good luck wrapping presents later.

Why I Keep Making It (Even When Nobody’s Around To Be Impressed)

Honestly, it’s become one of those little rituals I look forward to. Like, once the decorations are up and the cookies are mostly burned but still edible, I make one of these and sit by the tree. Just me, the lights, and my weird snow-covered glass.

I’ve served it at a couple of holiday parties and people always ask what it is. Usually after their first sip. And then they want the recipe, and then they try to remember what “white cranberry-peach” looks like at the store and end up texting me blurry shelf photos.

But even on quiet nights—maybe especially then—it hits different. It feels like a reward. Or a pause. Or both.

A Few Other Holiday Cocktails I’ve Tried (None Of Which Took Over Like This One Did)

I’ve experimented. Some were great. Some were… ambitious. Here are a few I still make from time to time:

  • Cranberry Champagne Spritzers – Champagne + cranberry juice + rosemary garnish if you’re feeling fancy. Looks like effort, tastes like sparkle.
  • Peppermint White Russian – Toss in peppermint schnapps, then top with crushed candy canes. Sweet. Slightly dangerous.
  • Hot Buttered Rum – This one’s cozy. Also rich. You need to be fully committed.
  • Spiced Apple Cider Sangria – White wine and apple cider plus sliced fruit. It tastes like adult apple juice and gets people talking.

A Cocktail That Accidentally Became A Tradition

I didn’t mean to make this drink “my thing,” but… it’s kind of become just that. I think because it’s festive without being too serious. It looks like effort, but it’s actually low-lift. It’s cheerful. It doesn’t ask too much. And I love that.

Some people have peppermint bark. Some people do matching pajamas. Me? I make a Clausmopolitan.

So yeah—if you’re in the mood for something simple and festive that looks fancier than it is, give this one a shot. You might love it. Or you might just like having an excuse to keep coconut flakes in your cupboard past New Year’s.

Cheers. Or whatever sounds better with a frosty glass in your hand.

After the Clausmopolitan, the only thing that’s ever come close in holiday magic? Chocolate Bomb Pudding Shots. Think boozy dessert meets festive fun.
