I noticed every time I scroll through CleanTok I see some new “hack” that makes something that is quite possibly already pretty terrible, even worse, and making it go faster and easier, or somehow better and magical, even better. The most recent one circulating? Some people putting their dishwasher pods right into the bottom of the dishwasher (or even dropping it into the silverware basket), none of which is actually the little detergent compartment. Supposedly cleaner dishes. But does it really work that way?

Why People Are Skipping the Dispenser

The detergent dispenser on your dishwasher is not just for design; it is timed to pop open at just the right position in the cycle for your detergent to be released, at a time that it will actually do the most good. However, the internet being the internet, some folks are convinced that applying the pod loose means a “stronger clean” because the detergent is acting right away.

I understand where they are coming from. It feels like you are letting the soap start spreading around right from the beginning, like you are sinking an army of suds from the moment you hit start. But the reality is this is not the way to get dishwasher clean dishes.

What Exactly Goes Wrong When You Toss Pods Loose

It sounds simple enough to toss it in the bottom and let it melt. However, a few things can happen:

  • Incomplete dissolving. Pods are designed to dissolve completely when that dispenser door opens. If you dump them loose, sometimes, if your dishwasher is crammed full, they won’t dissolve fully.
  • Weaker cleaning. The timing of the dispenser release is really important. If your pod dissolves at the very start of the wash cycle, with most of the power evaporating prior to your dishes needing it.
  • Residue issues. Have you ever opened your dishwasher to find cloudy glasses or that strange film on your plates? Dumping pods in the tub tends to build up detergent on your dishes and also within the dishwasher.

So, Where Do Pods Belong?

The boring and right answer is still in the dispenser. Here’s why it is important:

  • Timed release. The little door opens exactly when the wash cycle needs the boost and soap can remediate the wash cycle instead of dissolving too soon.
  • Proper dissolving. The compartment is built in a way that water can flow over the pod and it can break down properly. No half-melted clumps left, or sticky residue.
  • Efficiency. When you put it in the dispenser, you are not wasting detergent. Everything is going to work for you, and not going down the drain too soon.

What Do Appliance Experts Say

Appliance experts would all confirm the same thing: the pods, tablets, powder, whatever form of detergent you prefer, all goes in the dispenser. Dishwashers are made to work with that compartment. Manufacturers produce the pods to ensure they work in that compartment. If you use them otherwise, you are sabotaging the wash cycle.

And If You Use Liquid or Powder?

The same note here: liquid, powder, or pods only go through the dispenser. That is the only way to guarantee consistent, trustworthy cleaning. It’s really tough to not get caught up in all of the new tips and tricks from social media, but honestly with dishwasher detergent, just stick with the dispenser. You will receive the best results by doing so.

The dispenser came with your dishwasher for a reason, and it’s best to use it. Load a pod in the dispenser, close the little door, and let the machine be your dishwasher. The viral “bottom of dishwasher” hack is really easy and looks great, but if you care and want your dishes to be shiny not cloudy, trust the dispenser!
