I’m sad to say that cold and flu season is fast approaching. In fact, I’m fighting back the sniffles right now as I type this. There are multiple things you can do to prevent you and your family from getting sick this season. Sickness is caused by germs, so if you can limit the spread of those germs, you can limit the chance of your entire house getting sick!

When it comes to our children (and grandchildren), they tend to be really good at carrying and spreading germs. If your child goes to daycare, they’re being surrounded by other little friends with runny noses and the beginnings of coughs. Young children also love to put things in their mouths, so it’s not surprising as to how they come into contact with so many germs.

Thankfully, this hack can definitely help to limit the amount of germs your child is exposed to. Children’s toys should all be cleaned on a regular basis, as they’re a huge transmitter of germs and bacteria. For this hack, all you have to do is put all of your child’s plastic and rubber toys in the dishwasher. Remember not to add in any toys with batteries or electronic aspects.

Then, place two cups of distilled vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Distilled vinegar is an excellent natural disinfectant, plus it’s safe for people and specifically children. Run the cycle as you normally would, and when the toys come out, they’ll be clean and germ-free. Just be sure you’re not running the vinegar through your dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment, as the acidity can damage the rubber seals and gaskets.
