If you have sterling silver jewelry (or silverware), you don’t need me to tell you how hard it can be to keep it looking shiny and new. The best place for silver jewelry is in a sealed bag in a cool, dark place. However, most of us don’t store our jewelry in hiding, and so, it naturally becomes tarnished over time. However, with just two simple ingredients (and some aluminum foil), you can make your jewelry and other silver look brand new again.

NZ Coins shared their method for cleaning silver that doesn’t involve any harsh chemicals or speciality cleaning products. Start out by lining a shallow bowl with aluminum foil. Then, add a few spoonfuls of baking soda and salt into the bowl. Pour some boiling water over top of the mixture. Next, carefully add in your jewelry or silverware, mixing around the solution one or two times.

Let your silver soak for about five minutes, then dry and buff it using a soft cloth. And that’s it! Although this isn’t something you want to do all the time (as it will wear the patina off the silver), two or three times a year is completely fine.
