Can a Spoon in the Champagne Bottle Keep it Bubbly?

Though I enjoy a glass of champagne from time to time, I’ve always wondered: how do you preserve the bubbles? We’ve all had the experience of cracking open a lovely bottle of bubbly, taking our first sip, and when we come back for the second go-around, it’s flat. To my surprise, I came across a TikTok trend that went viral where a simple metal spoon was used to save the bubbly in champagne. Could this finally be my answer? I had to find out.

Going Flat: The Bubbly Dilemma

So, the first question is, why does champagne, specifically, or any carbonated drink, become flat once it opens? As I started to investigate this fizzy dilemma, it really is all about carbon dioxide (CO2). When you open the champagne bottle, the pressure from the carbon dioxide that creates the bubbles starts to escape into the air. The end result is something we have all experienced… a sad, flat sip of what was once a bubbly drink.

The Spoon Hack

After all of the controversy surrounding TikTok, I had a simple answer: take a spoon and insert the handle into an already opened bottle of champagne. The proposition was that this spoon managed to work its magic by regulating the temperature.

Now, here’s the science behind it: when you place the open bottle in the refrigerator with the metal spoon inside, the spoon will absorb warm air from the neck of the bottle. Remember that cold air is denser than warm air, so when the warm air is replaced with cold air, the spoon acts like a natural barrier to the escaping carbon dioxide. How neat!

Testing the Spoon

You know I had to test this hack out. I grabbed a bottle of champagne, a sturdy metal spoon, and a large dose of skepticism. After opening the bottle and inserting the spoon into the bottle, I very carefully put it in the fridge.

Hours later, I ventured back with a very nervous expectation to find yet another flat glass of champagne waiting for me. However, to my surprise, when I poured out the glass of champagne, the effervescence was still there! The bubbles were still dancing and tickling my mouth as they did when I first popped the cork. The metal spoon hack had served its purpose.

The Lesson: Champagne Maintenance

In my own personal experiment, the metal spoon hack seemed to work perfectly. The carbonation in the champagne was intact, and my glass of bubbly was as good as any other version of itself.

So if you ever find yourself with an open bottle of champagne, apprehensive that you’ll lose it, now you have a fun way to save it! Just slip a metal spoon in the bottle and let your fridge do the rest. It may not work all the time, but who needs foolproof anyway? When saving a perfectly good bottle of champagne, the best way is to drink it the way nature intended: bubbly and full of joy.
