I’ll admit it — the first time I heard about sleeping with bay leaves under your pillow, I thought it was a bit kooky. Why would anyone do that? But the more I examined it, the more I realized there is a lot of meaning behind this simple tradition. It has to do with antiquity, spirituality, even health in our modern age. And hey, I’m always ready to experiment for something that’s low effort and interesting. And kinda spooky?

So, why do people put bay leaves under their pillows? Well, the reasons vary, but it usually comes down to one of three things: promoting vivid dreams, protecting yourself from negativity, or attracting some good vibes into your life. Sounds good and interesting, in my opinion. Let me break it down for you.

The History of Bay Leaves

Goddamn bay leaves have been special for literally thousands of years. They are from a laurel tree, which the ancient Greeks and Romans considered sacred. If you’ve ever seen photos of ancient Olympic champions or Roman emperors wearing those leafy crowns, that’s laurel. It represented triumph, wisdom and protection back then. Awesome really.

But it wasn’t all looks with the bay leaves. They were objects used in rituals, in ceremonies, thought to possess magical properties. They were believed to prevent bad energy, enhance visibility and even aid in prophecy. That’s also how bay leaves came to be tucked under pillows too—they’ll ensure you remember how to connect with those ancient vibes in your sleep.

For Dreams and Prophecy

One of the most popular reasons people put bay leaves under their pillow is to improve dreams. They are thought to enhance your dreams, making them more… vivid, and perhaps even prophetic. That goes all the way back to the Greeks, who connected bay leaves with Apollo, the god of prophecy.

The theory is the leaves have this kinda “opening” energy that allow you to tap into your subconscious or even get messages in your dreams. Some write a question or intention on a bay leaf and place it under their pillow in hopes for clarity when they awaken.

I tried this on myself, and while I didn’t wake up like that, I did have a dream that seemed a little more vivid and interesting than usual. Maybe it was all placebo, maybe there’s something to it — I don’t know. But I can certainly understand why people are willing to experiment with it.

For Protection

One more reason some people utilize bay leaves under their pillow is for protection. In good old days, bay leaves were believed to protect against evil spirits, bad luck or negative energy. It’s hard to imagine feeling more reassured than knowing you had a shield against the supernatural close at hand, even just a tiny bit of one.

Even today, some consider bay leaves a spiritual form of protection. Sticking one under your pillow can be like making a little bubble of optimism and tranquillity. For me, there’s nothing wrong with adding a small ritual like this to my bedtime routine — it’s comforting, if nothing else.

Attracting Luck and Love

Bay leaves are also tied to attracting good luck, love, and abundance. I’ve read that people sometimes write their wishes or goals on a bay leaf and keep it under their pillow to “manifest” them. It’s like giving your dreams a boost with a physical symbol.

So when I first heard of this, I was skeptical. But as I tried it, I soon learned that whether or not the leaf specifically has any magical powers isn’t the point at all. It’s more about establishing an intention. Like, for instance, I jotted down a goal I was striving toward onto a leaf and stuffed it under my pillow. Whether the leaf manifested it or not, the writing and the attention felt grounding.

Even if you’re not big on the spiritual stuff, if you just like the idea of being able to connect with something meaningful, incorporating bay leaves into your bedtime routine is one small, daily ritual you can use to help push your day’s worries away for another new start. And they have an earthy scent that’s kind of calming.

One thing I would suggest if you’re going to give this a try: make sure the leaves are clean and dry. Fresh bay leaves may stain your pillow and no one wants that! I just use the dry ones from my spice rack. Because I once stained my favorite pillow badly.

I’m not promising this will do the trick, but it’s such a simple thing to try. And if you have some bay leaves around already, there’s no harm in giving it a shot. It’s not so much about does it actually work for me as it is I wanted to build in a moment of silence and rest right before bed. A small ritual to stop, reflect or even simply provide you with an old tradition.

Whether you’re looking to dream more vividly, sleep more soundly or you’re just interested, why not give it a go? At a minimum, it’s a good story to tell — and who knows, you might wake up feeling at least a little bit more refreshed.
