Why Genetics Matters More Than Weather
The reason this pattern is so reliable across a rainy year, a dry year, a good field or a struggling one? Row number is determined strongly by plant genetics and less so by environment. The plant’s blueprint sets the row structure early, and weather doesn’t easily rewrite it.
What the weather does affect is a different number. How many kernels actually fill out and become plump, harvestable corn depends heavily on pollination and growing conditions. There’s a real gap between potential kernel sites on the cob and the kernels that successfully develop.
So you might have a well-organized even number of rows, but with gaps where kernels never filled in. That’s usually a pollination story, not a row-count story. The two things get tangled together at the dinner table, but they answer to different rules.
When You Might Find an Odd Number of Rows
Odd counts do turn up now and then. When they do, it’s usually a sign that something went sideways during the ear’s development.
Severe stress during early ear development can disrupt the tidy pattern. Drought, nutrient deficiencies, or other developmental injury during this critical growth period can affect row-number formation.
None of these are common, which is exactly why the even pattern feels almost like a rule. If you want to test it yourself, count a handful of ears next time you’re shucking a batch.
