27-year-old Charlotte Sapwell was a single mother of two faced with a huge dilemma. A recent divorce had left she and her children facing homelessness, and she didn’t want to be strapped with the financial burden of a $400,000 house loan. So, what did she do? Charlotte got creative and decided to build a tiny home for her and her two sons in her grandfather’s backyard.

Fo five months, Charlotte and her grandfather worked around the clock to construct and finish her 3 x 6 meter tiny home. The entire project cost just over $10,000, with Charlotte building 99% of the “cubby style” home herself. The tiny home features a combined living room, kitchen, dining room, and main bedroom, while Charlotte’s two young sons share a separate bedroom. There is also a separate washroom.

“I went from living in a massive home with my husband and kids, to a tiny rented unit to this small space, and out of all the places I’ve lived, this is my favorite,” Charlotte revealed. “It is all mine. The kids are right there all the time and we are so close. Yes, it means we have virtually zero privacy from each other, but I love it,” she said.

“I don’t know how long we will stay in this space, but I can’t imagine living anywhere else but a tiny home now,” she continued. “I’ve learned to appreciate what I have and embrace minimalism. I just want other females to know they are capable of anything. And I want my boys to know, it doesn’t matter if you are a boy or a girl, anyone can build their future,” she said.

By building this tiny home, Charlotte proved that you are capable of anything if you put your mind to it. This mom was faced with a tough situation, but she persevered and wound up with an awesome new life for her and her sons. Hats off to Charlotte for her determination and creativity!
