As kids, we rely so much on our parents for everything, but we don’t necessarily see them as their own people. But many of us endured some rocky times with our parents in those turbulent teen years, and maturity enables a better appreciation of the years of care they provided. You can ask them these questions to get to know them better before it is too late.

1. What is your favorite childhood memory?

It’s hard to imagine our parents were once children, too. Your parents likely have a few fond childhood memories that stand out for them.

2. What was your first concert?

So fun hearing your parents talk about firsts! Their choice in early music can say a lot about them, and it’s always fun to ask.

3. What’s the best advice your parents ever gave you?

If your parents were handed some striking piece of advice or wisdom from their parents, they’ve probably kept it in the back of their heads their entire lives.

4. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When you were my age, you probably remembered what sort of things you wanted to be when you grew up (I wanted to be a ballerina!). I find it also interesting to hear what our parents’ earliest aspirations and wishes were.

5. What’s your favorite memory from when I was a child?

It’s probably difficult for your parents to choose just one, but they no doubt hold many special memories from your own childhood near and dear. You might not recall these memories, but they’re so special to hear.

6. What are some family traditions that you enjoy?

Whether they are traditions your parents shared with you as a kid or ones you shared with your parents growing up, every parent has at least one family tradition of their own that you’re likely to want to continue one day, too.

7. What is one thing you would change in the world?

I know what my response would be. And your parents can surely name one of these off the top of their heads too!

8. Anything you think I should know moving forward?

It’s crucial to have candid conversations with your parents about their preferences for the future. This could include living at home, living in a nursing home, or other aspects of their care. It sounds morbid, but it’s also smart to talk to your parents, too, about what type of funeral or celebration of life they want when that time comes. By continuing to ask these difficult questions, you will be able to honor your parents’ wishes.

Some special presents can increase connection and bonds with parents. Figuring out good gifts for older folk can seem like a Herculean task at times, however, there are all kinds of ways to show them you care.
