Buying a mattress tends to be a rather big investment. And it should be – after all, the average person spends about one third of their life sleeping. So you definitely want to be comfortable and get a good night’s sleep as your body recharges! Most people buy mattresses, and then don’t really give them a second thought. However, even the priciest mattress doesn’t have a lifespan of decades. That’s why it’s important to know how often you should replace your mattress.

According to Sleep Foundation, you should replace your mattress every six to eight years. However, this should be used as a general rule of thumb – there are multiple factors that affect how often your mattresses will need to be replaced. If you find your mattress has started to sag in certain spots, you tend to sleep better in other people’s beds, you wake up stiff or sore, or you start to experience symptoms of allergies at night, it’s probably time for a new mattress.

As with most products, you get what you pay for. An inexpensive mattress will not last as long as a high-quality mattress. Foam mattresses don’t tend to last as long either, as they are more prone to impressions developing over time. Factors like a sleeper’s weight and if you share your bed with kids and pets will also affect the lifespan of your mattress.

When you’ve acknowledged that it’s time to buy a new mattress, be sure to do your research. There are so many different mattresses on the market, but you can definitely find the one that works best for you. There are mattresses made for side, back, and stomach sleepers, and mattresses with adjustable settings for sleepers who have partners with different mattress preferences. Investing in a good-quality mattress will serve you better in the long run rather than buying a series of cheap mattresses and having to replace them more often. You deserve a good night’s sleep, and you deserve a good mattress!
