The Handyman Method For Unclogging A Toilet (No Plunger Required!)

source: American Fire

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been living in a short-term rental over the years, only to discover that the toilet has become clogged and I’m without any sort of plunger. Next, it’s a mad dash to the nearest hardware store to buy one. And sometimes after even the most vigorous plunging, the clog won’t go down.

If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation before, the tip I’m about to share with you is bound to come in handy sooner or later. You don’t need a plunger to deal with a clogged toilet – all you need is some liquid dish soap. Trust me on this one!

Start by pouring at least half a cup of liquid dish soap directly into the toilet bowl. Let the dish soap sit for about half an hour. During that time, the weight of the dish soap will cause it to seep lower into the bowl, eventually covering the clog and loosening it up.

When the time’s up, pour a bucket of very hot water into the toilet bowl, being careful not to let it splash. You’ll also want to ensure you don’t pour so much water in the bowl that it begins to overflow over the sides. Pouring the hot water into the bowl will help to further the clog along, so that you’ll have a working toilet again!
