4 Easy Ways To Make Sure You Never Have Fruit Flies Again

Fruit flies are a nuisance. They’re attracted to sweet, sugary things, and are particularly bad between the spring and fall (though they can appear in winter, too)! Fortunately, there are a few very simple steps you can take to rid your home of fruit flies once and for all. Here they are!
1. Protect Your Produce

If you have a fruit bowl sitting out on your counter, you’ll especially want to make sure you wash and dry your produce right when you bring it home from the grocery store. This will kill off fruit flies that may already be on your fruit, as well as protect it from future fruit flies.
2. Clean Your Kitchen

The dirtier the kitchen, the greater number of fruit flies. Fruit flies are attracted to dirty dishes and counters that are full of spills and crumbs. Be sure to wipe down your counter well after every meal, wash dishes as you use them (or put them right in the dishwasher), and rinse out your sink.
3. Strong Scents

Fruit flies (as well as other insects and pests) hate the strong smells of peppermint, lavender, cloves, and eucalyptus. You can grow small pots of these plants to place in your kitchen, or add a few drops of their essential oil to water to use as a cleaning or room spray. Be aware many essential oils are harmful to pets, so do your research before using any of these oils in a home with pets.
4. Swap Out Sponges

We use sponges and dish cloths to clean up spills and dishes. And so, it’s no secret that they are very enticing to fruit flies. Be sure to wash or replace your dish cloths regularly, and wash and rinse your sponges regularly, too.
By following these simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to combating those pesky fruit flies!
